We are Uniper: an international energy company with about 7.500 employees. We combine a balanced portfolio of technologically advanced large-scale assets with outstanding technical and commercial expertise. These assets and capabilities enable us to deliver flexible, bespoke, competitively priced energy products and services with agility, precision and speed. We are looking for a Trainee or Master’s thesis intern at Uniper Benelux Uniper Benelux is investigating opportunities to decarbonise its operations. The hydrogen business development team looks into producing green hydrogen as one of the technologies. As the energy system in Europe is in transition to become fully renewable and decarbonised by 2050, fossil energy generators (coal, gas) will continue to play a role into the 2030’s. European and Dutch regulations set strict boundary conditions for producing green hydrogen. Hydrogen from an electrolyser can only be called ‘green’ if the electrons that fuel the electrolyser are from renewable sources. While the environmental logic of the rules are sound, it creates challenges to forecast business cases into the uncertain future, and to optimise operations of future electrolysers on a day-by-day basis. Wind fluctuations in island clusters – Netherlands is a first mover in Europe when it comes to developing a hydrogen pipeline network. Still: it will not be before 2032 earliest that all industrial clusters in the Netherlands will be connected, and connections to Germany and Belgium will be available. Electrolysers will primarily use off-shore wind power that fluctuates in time – only few consumers of hydrogen can work with fluctuations, most need stable supply. Maximisation of electrolyser utilisation Each off-shore wind power source has its slightly different requirements to avoid power grid congestion. Depending on the conditions of the market it may be feasible to use grid electricity to produce green hydrogen, or other forms of certified low carbon hydrogen. As the market rules are still in motion, we see opportunity for a traineeship to build reliable and efficient tools that can automate business case scenarios. Different hydrogen consumers each will have different volume, quality and flexibility requirements, how can each be served reliably? For both topics, we seek experience in energy system analysis fundamentals via an academic or higher technical education. Experience with modern modelling software will be expected. At Uniper, we are pro-actively transforming the world of energy whilst at the same time ensuring security of energy supply. As an internationally operating company, we work in very diverse teams with the greatest possible working time flexibility for our employees. Our corporate culture is characterized by equal opportunities, mutual appreciation, and respect. With us, you will be able to develop new business models, work on technological solutions for a modern, sustainable, and future-oriented energy supply as well as pro-actively help to shape changes. Interested? Then we will look forward to meeting you!
